The Still Picture Branch has multiple indexes to search for various branches of the U.S. Military. Our U.S. Air Force index, 342-Z: Personality Index to Photographs of Activities, Facilities, and Personnel is now fully-digitized in the catalog, and covers individuals included in our US Air Force photographs from ca. 1910 – ca. 1980.
Similar to our Army personality index (111-PX) and World War II Navy personality index (80-GX), it is important to keep in mind that not every individual who served in the Air Force during this time is included in the index. We have many candid photos of U.S. Military personnel but in most of them, there is no identification of the people shown. Keep in mind that many of these photographs were taken by combat photographers, who may not have had the time to write down every name of the individuals in the photo for the final caption. Typically, higher ranking individuals are identified, although there are certainly many lesser-known military personnel and civilians included.
Originally known as the Army Air Corps/Army Air Forces, the U.S. Air Force was established in 1947. Due to how the records were transferred to the National Archives, the records in this name index and the corresponding photograph series are all within the Record Group for the U.S. Air Force (Record Group 342). Photographs that correspond to the entries in this index can be located in the series:
342-AF: “Photographs of Activities, Facilities, and Personnel, ca. 1940–1981”
342-C: “Photographs of Activities, Facilities, and Personnel, ca. 1940–ca. 1980”
342-P: “Photographs of Air Force Officers and Officials, 1960–1981”
The series 342-Z: Personality Index to Photographs of Activities, Facilities, and Personnel has two parts which cover different time periods. Part 1 covers names relating to the period 1954-1980, while Part 2 is dated before and covers names that predate 1954, with some overlap between each part. It is important to note that not all of the items cited in the index still exist, particularly those listed in Part 2. Please also note that Part 1 contained personally identifiable information (PII) that was redacted prior to being uploaded, so only PDF files are available for those entries.
Searching 342-Z
To locate the series 342-Z through the Catalog search, simply enter “342-Z” into the search bar on the homepage of the Catalog. You can also search by the National Archives Identifier Number (NAID) “542378.”

Then, click the result titled “Personality Index to Photographs of Activities, Facilities, and Personnel, ca. 1942–ca. 1980,” NAID 542378. It helps to narrow the search results to “Series,” under “Level of Description.”

Once you have clicked the title of the series, you will be taken to the overall catalog entry or page for the series 342-Z. You can click on the blue button “Search within this series” to view all of the related catalog entries.

Within the catalog, the records are grouped alphabetically in a range by the last names of individuals within what are called “File Units.” File Units are groupings of multiple related records within one catalog entry or page. In this series, the File Units are grouped into two parts based on year, and thereunder alphabetically. After clicking the “Search within this series” button, you will see a list of all of the available file units. To search, you will need to locate the group of records that includes the time period and last name of the person you are searching for.

For example, to search for someone who served during World War II with the last name “Allen,” we would find the File Unit titled “Personality Index to U.S. Air Force Photographs: Part II (ca. 1910 – ca. 1953) – Aalto THRU Anderson”
After selecting a File Unit, you can view all of the cards in the alphabetical range. Please note that Part 1 are PDF files online, while Part 2 has multiple images within one file unit. Once you have located a card with the name of the person we are searching for, you can then find the associated photograph identifier number. Typically the number needed to locate the photograph will include a prefix or suffix such as “A.C.,” “USAF,” “K,” etc.

While not all of the related photographs have been digitized or are available on our online catalog, we were able to locate the photograph of Lt. Clifford Allen within the series of color photos 342-C: Photographs of Activities, Facilities, and Personnel by using the color, or “K” number on the card. The local identifier number for the color transparency is 342-C-K3746. Please note that these index cards lead to photographs in various different series.

Important Tips
Included below are a few tips to keep in mind while searching.
- This index consists of two parts arranged by date. Part 1 covers the years 1954-1980 and Part 2 covers ca. 1900-1953. As such, Part 1 is dated after Part 2. The titles of the File Units include the date ranges, so that one may efficiently search.
- Not all of the items cited in the index still exist, particularly those listed in Part 2. There may be instances where a card lists photograph identifier numbers that cannot be located. Additionally, if a number was crossed out on the card, it may have been assigned a different identifier number by the U.S. Air Force.
- This index covers a variety of subjects including individual and group photos, events, meetings, etc., however, it is not comprehensive. In other words, not every individual identified in every U.S. Air Force photograph is listed in this index.
- Part 1 includes Personally Identifiable Information (PII), and was therefore redacted before it was uploaded online. As such, only full PDFs are available to view. Due to the file size, the records may be slow to view in the online catalog, however, downloading the file and viewing locally on a computer may be faster. Part 2 includes individual images of all cards.
- While the majority of cards are devoted to single images, there are also numerous cards containing multiple-item listings. As such, a card may have multiple photograph identifier numbers, and therefore lead to numerous photographs.
- Prior to their transfer in 1998, the U.S. Air Force loaned these records and related documentation to the National Air and Space Museum (NASM) in 1983.
Examples of Numbers
The index includes a variety of photograph identifier numbers. Depending on the number, the image can be located within different series of records. Below we have included a few samples of numbers that can be found on the index cards, and their associated series.
342-AF: Black and White Negatives, Photographs of Activities, Facilities, and Personnel
Black and white negatives can be found within the series 342-AF. The photograph identifier numbers are indicated with the suffixes: A.S./AS, A.C./AC, USAF.

342-C: Color Negatives, Photographs of Activities, Facilities, and Personnel
Color negatives for U.S. Air Force photographs can be found within the series 342-C. The photograph identifier numbers are typically prefixed by: K, KE, and KKE.

342-P: Photographs of Air Force Officers and Officials
The series 342-P focuses on portraits of U.S. Air Force Officers and Officials. The names of all of the individuals included within the series are transcribed and searchable in the online catalog here. If you are searching for a high-ranking individual and locate a listing for portraits, you may wish to also search 342-P. Index cards with a reference to the “General’s Book” may be located in 342-P. For example, the photographs cited on the card below are likely within 342-P here.

Obtaining Copies
Unfortunately, the vast majority of the photographs associated with this index have not been digitized online. If a photograph of interest is located, we invite you to visit our College Park Research Room to view the photo and any other related photographs as well.
